What does a Learning Assistant do?
As a Learning Assistant, you’ll gain valuable personal and professional experience. You’ll strengthen your communication and group facilitation skills while working closely with faculty and staff in your academic field. You’ll also play a meaningful role in helping your peers succeed and become more connected to the university’s learning community.
As an LA, you are considered a pedagogical partner in the course. In many cases, you may help shape course materials—such as worksheets, classroom activities, or homework and quiz questions. Because the LA model is flexible, your role will be tailored to fit the needs of your course. This could mean facilitating group activities during lectures, labs, or recitations, or leading study sessions outside of class. While your contributions are wide-ranging, keep in mind that LAs do not grade, proctor exams, or hold one-on-one office hours.
Key benefits you’ll gain as an LA include:
-
Developing strong communication and group facilitation skills
-
Collaborating directly with faculty and staff in your field
-
Contributing to course activities and materials
-
Supporting your peers’ success in their classes
-
Engaging more deeply with the university’s learning community
