Are there training requirements to become a Learning Assistant?

Yes. All Learning Assistants must complete training and professional development requirements through the Learning Centers. These include:

Peer Leader Training

  • LAs must complete asynchronous New or Returning Peer Leader training modules prior to their Peer Leader Orientation.

  • LAs register for and attend a full-day Peer Leader Orientation session before or at the start of the semester. LAs only need to attend Peer Leader Orientation once per academic year.

  • LAs are required to participate in additional professional development workshops (online or in-person) during the semester:

    • First-time LAs: complete one workshop

    • Returning LAs: complete two workshops

Study Group LAs

  • LAs who are scheduled to lead a study group must attend one study group LA training session during the first two weeks of the semester.

Observations

  • LA sessions are observed each semester. After being observed, LAs meet with their observer to discuss their feedback and to ask any questions for how they could improve in their role.
