Are there training requirements to become a Learning Assistant?

Yes. All Learning Assistants must complete pre-work training and then continued professional development throughout their employment provided by the Learning Centers.

These include:

Peer Leader Training (ALL LAs) Pre-Work Training

  • Prior to the start of the semester:

    • Synchronous Modules: LAs must complete New or Returning Peer Leader Asynchronous Canvas training modules prior to their Peer Leader Orientation.

    • Peer Leader Orientation: LAs register for and attend a full-day Peer Leader Orientation session before the start of the semester. LAs only need to attend Peer Leader Orientation and complete the Asynchronous Canvas modules once per academic year.

Ongoing semester professional development requirements:

  • LAs are required to participate in additional professional development workshops (online or in-person) throughout the semester:

    • First-time LAs: Complete one workshop in your first semester and successfully complete the Pedagogy of Peer-Led Learning Course.

    • Returning LAs: Complete two professional development workshops of your choosing each semester (either online or in-person).

If you have questions about PL Training requirements, please contact PL Training at pltraining@echo.rutgers.edu.

Study Group LAs

  • LAs who are scheduled to lead a study group must attend one study group LA training session during the first two weeks of the semester.

If you have questions about study group training, please contact LA Program Staff at learningassistants@echo.rutgers.edu.

Observations

  • LAs are observed throughout their time working with the LA Program to help create goals so that LAs can continue to progress and develop in their roles. Observations are scheduled and LA sessions are observed. Feedback is then curated in an observation form and provided. After being observed, LAs meet with their observer to discuss their feedback and to ask any questions on how they could improve in their role.

If you have questions about LA observations, please contact PL Training at pltraining@echo.rutgers.edu.
